Farewell, Life, I wish I knew you well.

At birth, everyone is presented with one life to do with as they please.  I’m holding onto mine for a rainy day.  A rainy day that will most likely never come.  I just sat here looking through a magazine full of pictures…beautiful destinations that I will never see.  The majority of my existence (I can’t call it a life, because it really isn’t one) seems to be spent staring at 4 gray walls and the glow from a computer monitor.  I only have the monotonous hum of the air conditioner to keep me company.  The large clock on the wall is looked at more than the files and documents that cover my workspace.  What kind of existence is this?  There are no do-overs.  This is it.  This is all I have to look forward to.  But, all is not lost…I get to do it again tomorrow!

What a depressing thought.

I am a mom, hear me roar

Posted on April 17th, 2008 in My Thoughts by Mel

Today marks 6 years since I’ve been a single mom.  April 17, 2002, Mo was only 15 months old…still practically a helpless baby.  Now she’s almost 7 1/2 and knows more than I do (according to her anyway).  Has it been an easy road?  Definitely not.  Has it been a rewarding one?  Most definitely.

All the sleepless nights (for both of us), doctors visits (and several trip to the E.R., ugh), ear infections, injuries, sicknesses, school functions, vacations, teaching her to swim and ride a bike, I’ve broken down in tears when she was sad and rejoiced when she was happy.

Many people don’t know what it’s like to wear your heart outside your body, but I do.  Everything she is is because of me.  Except for the attitude.  She gets that from her father.

Disney stays on the sequel bandwagon

Posted on April 9th, 2008 in My Thoughts by Mel

It’s no secret that there are many sequels to popular Disney movies. I guess Disney decided, “Hey, why mess with a good thing?” That would certainly explain the 42 Aladdin movies and the 73 The Lion King movies. According to this article, there will be a Toy Story 3 coming to theaters on June 18, 2010, and Cars 2 in the Summer of 2012. I’m actually looking forward to Toy Story 3, since the first 2 movies were amazing. Supposedly, all the original voices will be returning…well, I’m assuming all the original voices except for Jim Varney (voice of Slinky Dog in Toy Stories 1 and 2) unless they plan on raising him from the dead. Given that this is Disney, anything is possible, right? ;)

Cars 2 has me scratching my head though. I’m surprised there were enough people who liked the first one to justify the cost of making a sequel. In fact, I own the DVD and have yet to be able to sit through the entire thing without sawing logs.

The article also mentions several other animated movies in the makings. No doubt just sequels waiting to happen.

Just let it die already

“Jericho” was a good show in its own right. Kept you on the edge of your seat many times. It ran its first season last year, which ended in a cliffhanger. Fans were appalled. How could they just let it end like that? So fans of the show sent truckloads of peanuts to CBS to try to get it back on the air, my boyfriend included. Peanuts were part of the story line, but forgive me for not telling you why, since I don’t remember why. CBS heard the fans and aired 7 more episodes recently to appease them. No cliffhanger, everything ended neat and tidy.

However, I guess that wasn’t enough. I received the following email last week:

Jericho - Update!
Today, Fri April 4, is the last day CBS is logging (counting) calls from people who want Jericho back.
www.cbs.com/jericho

they’re logging calls! 323.575.2380. Please take a moment to call.

You may get a person or you may get a machine. Just tell them you want to be counted as someone who enjoyed it and would enjoy it back on the air.

This info is from the jericho message boards at CBS.com

This won’t mean CBS will put jericho back on the air but it will encourage them to find a new network home for it.

Ummm……seriously? I liked “Jericho” as much as the next guy, but maybe it’s time for it to go by way of the dodo bird. I mean, what’s next? Sending in blue leisure suits to get The Brady Bunch back on the air?

If you’re really sad about “Jericho” ending, maybe buy the boxed DVD set so that you can bask in the goodness that is Jake anytime you want. Or start a rally to get all these damn reality shows off the air. Yeah, I think that’s a better idea. Down with Survivor!!!

I used to be cool

Posted on April 7th, 2008 in My Thoughts by Mel

I remember when I used to go to the mall with my friends.  We’d shop, eat,  check out the cute guys.  You know, that type of thing.  I never thought that, a mere 12 years later, I’d be going to the mall to hop around like a deranged monkey on some colored lights.  My local mall has a small platform where children (and children at heart) can play.  There are virtual bubbles to stomp on and pop, a virtual soccer game, a virtual race car game…basically, it’s a nerd-child’s every dream.

One day last week, I watched Mo play around on this platform for a few minutes, then she asked me to join her.  “Is she crazy?” I thought to myself, “Is it dignified to pop fake bubbles?”  I decided to find out.  I put down my iced tea and took the first leap.  Then I took another.  And another.

I didn’t care how I looked at that moment.  I was having fun with my daughter, and that’s all that counts.  Those “cool” kids couldn’t help but stare at me as they walked by.  I just smiled to myself and thought, “No wonder teenagers are always so miserable and griping.  They don’t know how to have fun.”

I’m proud to announce that I won the virtual soccer game.
